The Irish College of Ophthalmologists (ICO) is the postgraduate training and professional body for ophthalmologists in Ireland. The ICO is a registered charity (CRO 151473). The College works to improve eye health and promote the highest standards in eye care and ophthalmic training.
The ICO provides education for ophthalmologists in training, in practice, and for those who work alongside them. This supports the delivery of quality care to patients.
Each year, the ICO hosts two major events. The three-day Annual Conference takes place in May. The one-day Winter Conference happens in December. The Eye Care in Focus Conference, a clinical education event, is held in the autumn. It is aimed at the extended eye care team, including GPs, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, ophthalmic technicians, and management.
The ICO collaborates with key stakeholders such as patient support groups, the Health Service Executive, the Department of Health, the Medical Council, and the Forum of Postgraduate Training Bodies. Through these partnerships, the ICO provides leadership in patient-centered policy decisions and advocacy.
