Vincent’s survive a ‘Skerr’

By Mindo - 04th May 2018

Not a night for ‘tiki-taka’ football on account of strong crosswinds, this game was all about battling hard and pouncing on any chances that arose. After the initial back-and-forth, Vincent’s scored the opener from a ruthless counter. Luke Harrington powered a clearing header to the feet of Aidan McGrath, who quickly played Fionn through on goal to apply a clinical finish. The St Vincent’s intern has now found the back of the net in five of his last seven games. The second came soon after, when Darren pulled on a bouncing ball at the edge of the area to find the bottom corner. The intern, plying his trade in the Mater, always enjoys an attacking foray from left-back and the volley was a superb account-opener for the club. Skerries had chances, but failed to make the most of them.

The second 45 minutes were more attritional in nature. Peter Kelly, John Cosgrove and Rory Durand worked tirelessly in the middle, with John expertly pulling the strings going forward. The defence of Darren, Luke, Paddy O’Connor and Gav Kane was too strong in both the ground and aerial challenges to allow Skerries back into the game. Goal number three came from a flowing move down the right, with Fionn squaring for Aidan to finish from close range. A fantastic way to mark his return from honeymoon, and Aidan has now scored 17 goals in 13 league games.

Being available for midweek matches with an early kick-off is always a challenge for the doctors, and this one was no different. The travelling party of 13 made a huge commitment to be available, and winning on the road makes the extra effort all the more worthwhile.

Vincent’s key performer

While there were a number of stand-out performers, Luke Harrington deserves the nod. Always aggressive in the tackle and a rock under the high ball, Luke has added greater anticipation and tactical awareness to his game as the season has gone on. Relatively new to the role of centre-half, he has benefited from learning beside the likes of Paddy O’Connor, Andrew Delaney and Tommy Fitzgerald. The Vincent’s intern has turned potential into performance in recent months, and is a key part of the league’s best defence.
