The terms of reference for a working group on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in radiation oncology are currently being drafted.
The radiation oncology working group (ROWG) established a small sub-group to examine AI in radiation oncology. The group consisted of a range of disciplines involved in radiation oncology and was chaired by Prof Brenda McClean, Director of Physics, St Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network.
The sub-group provided a draft report to the ROWG for comment and the final report was submitted to the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) executive management team (EMT).
The report made a number of recommendations, one of which was to form a working group for AI in radiation oncology across the public centres.
This group would report to the NCCP through the ROWG.
The recommendations were approved by the NCCP EMT in March.
It was agreed to follow up with the HSE and Department of Health on the current position on AI in healthcare prior to the NCCP moving forward, according to
the minutes.
The minutes stated this was necessary “in order to streamline” the approach in the area.
A spokesperson for the NCCP told the Medical Independent it is currently exploring “if there are any other groups looking at AI in healthcare that might overlap with the work of this group” and “the possibility of coordinating efforts”.
The spokesperson added that the working group’s terms of reference are currently at drafting stage.
