Human trafficking awareness training will be available to all HSE staff, with specialised content created for those working in frontline services, this newspaper has learned.
In November, the HSE safety and quality committee was informed that the Executive was to be a nominated agency with responsibility under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Human Trafficking) Bill 2023.
Committee members discussed the need to ensure that awareness of human trafficking is included in all staff training, according to meeting minutes. The meeting heard there were plans to “engage with the relevant department within the HSE” and identify next steps required for the development of appropriate training.
A HSE spokesperson told the Medical Independent it had carried out a “training and resource needs analysis with staff to inform the development of a human trafficking training programme”. This action was in line with the Executive’s national social inclusion work plan for 2024.
The spokesperson said the HSE was currently mapping existing training available. They added that human trafficking awareness training will be available to all Executive staff, with specialised content created for frontline staff.
“Due to the relevancy of this topic in the wider context of domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence (DSGBV), information on human trafficking is featured on the HSE National DSGBV training programme module one – awareness.
“This module was launched on HSELanD in December 2023 and it is accessible to all HSE staff and staff from funded agencies.”
