Intern “leave principles” are currently being reviewed by the medical intern board following the HSE’s restructuring.
The principles will support medical schools and intern networks in the management of intern leave, according to a HSE spokesperson.
All HSE interns hold the NCHD contract and receive its full terms and conditions, including sick leave and maternity leave entitlements, said
the spokesperson.
Medical schools and intern networks engage with clinical training sites to “support any interns requiring flexible working arrangements”. This may include adaptions to working schedules following occupational health assessments or facilitating doctors to complete intern training after certified leave. Approximately 12-15 interns require such accommodations annually.
On 10 October last, a meeting of the medical intern unit’s management committee heard there was sometimes “limited flexibility” to provide flexible working arrangements.
“Members advised of limited flexibility to provide flexible working arrangements to meet trainees’ personal circumstances at times,” according to minutes obtained under Freedom of Information law.
Members agreed to collate data from their networks and contact regional health authorities to resolve matters locally in the first instance.
