By Pat Kelly - 02nd Dec 2024

Irish cardiology

The high standard of case competitions, oral and poster presentations was in evidence at the Irish Cardiac Society’s (ICS) 75th Annual Scientific Meeting, with a plethora of gifted early-career clinicians presenting on a wide range of topics.

Winner of the Electrophysiology Subgroup Case Competition, supported by The Cormac Trust, was Dr Caleb Powell, while Dr Mark Coyle was winner of the Heart Failure Subgroup Case Competition, which was supported by AstraZeneca.

Dr Michael Cronin was named as winner of the Imaging Case Competition, sponsored by Pfizer, while Dr Patrick Savage was announced as winner of the Prof David Foley Intervention Case Competition, which was supported by Viatris.

The Brian McGovern Scholarship 2024 recipient was revealed as Dr Joe McCambridge and this award was sponsored by GE Healthcare.

The 2024 winner of the prestigious Brian Maurer Young Investigator Award was named as Dr Bethany Wong. Dr Wong presented on the topic: ‘Sex-related cardiovascular differences and progression of heart failure in those at risk for or with pre-heart failure’.

This year’s Young Investigator Award was chaired by ICS President Prof Pascal McKeown, with presentations delivered under the watchful eyes of the judging panel, Ms Cathleen Biga, Prof John Harold, Prof André Ng, and Dr Carol Wilson.

This award is named in honour of the late Dr Brian Maurer, who was President of the ICS from 1988 to 1990 and who, throughout his career, was a strong advocate for research and very supportive of all young cardiologists as they embarked on their careers.
