ICGP appoints Dr Tony Cox as new Medical Director

Dr Cox has a long history of involvement with the ICGP. A former President of the College (2014-15), he has recently served as Chair of the PGTC (Post Graduate Training Committee) and has been a Board member for four years.

He was previously Chair of the MICGP Examinations Committee and has served as an Examiner for the College since 1993. He is a GP Trainer on the Mid-West GP Training Scheme.

Dr Cox has practised as a GP in Co Clare for over 25 years. He has been involved in the Clare Faculty of ICGP since 1991, where he held a number roles.

He has a special clinical interest in diabetes care and chronic disease management in the community. He also has a strong interest in dermatology and in palliative care and in medicine for the elderly.

 The role of Medical Director is a very wide brief, according to the College. Its main focus is to provide leadership, policy development and clinical oversight across the College functions including education, professional competence, quality and standards, external representation. The position includes representing the international profile of the College.

The Medical Director plays a key role in the implementation of the ICGP Strategic Plan Beyond 2020- Statement of Strategy 2016-2021.

Dr Cox said: “I am looking forward to engaging with all ICGP members at College events both nationally and locally at faculty level. As Medical Director, I will listen to the concerns and recommendations of ICGP members, and reflect members’ concerns. “

“The appointment of the Primary Care Leads for Integrated Care Programmes in Diabetes care, Asthma, COPD and Cardiovascular Disease will provide new avenues for improved care delivery. This is an exciting time in the College’s history and I will work closely with the four incumbents in order to make this initiative a success for members and their patients. This will be a key opportunity to ensure that the core elements of general practice are central to these progammes”, he added.

Dr Cox succeeds Dr Brendan O’Shea, who stepped down from the post in February 2018 and Dr Margaret O’Riordan who held the post from 2011 – 2016.
