HSE launches recruitment campaign for six Area Directors of Public Health

The HSE launched a recruitment campaign today, (Friday 24 September 2021), for six Area Directors of Public Health as part of an agreement to introduce a consultant-delivered service delivery model for public health medicine.

These Area Directors of Public Health will be appointed to lead each of the six reconfigured public health areas and will have responsibility for protecting and improving the health of the Irish population within their assigned geographic area. Working with and reporting to the National Director of Public Health, the Area Director of Public Health will provide strategic and clinical leadership to modernise, enhance and reform the delivery of public health services.

This campaign follows the recent launch of the National Director of Public Health campaign, which remains live until the 30 September. Applications for the Area Directors of Public Health opened today and will and close on the 14 October 2021. Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly said: “As we move on from this pandemic, it is essential that Ireland’s public health system is resourced correctly. The six positions advertised today are another milestone for public health and will deliver improved health outcomes for the population.”

The HSE Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Colm Henry, added that: “These Area Directors of Public Health will be key leaders and the expert hublic Health voice at area level to protect and promote the health of our communities. As we emerge from this pandemic, the Area Directors of Public Health will be key to remobilising other components of public health medicine including the promotion of public health and wellbeing, the ongoing evaluation and improvement of our health services and the use of health data and intelligence to inform those developments. They will drive the transformation at area level required to deliver improvements in the health of the public in the years to come.”
