The first influenza cases of the 2021/2022 season have been notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) during the week 18-24 October.
Two laboratory confirmed influenza cases, one influenza A(H3) and one influenza B, were notified during the week of 18-24 October, according to the latest influenza surveillance in Ireland weekly report.
A number of possible influenza cases were notified on the Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting (CIDR) information system and were undergoing further investigation
Globally, influenza detections had increased in recent weeks, although at levels lower than expected for this time of the year. In Europe, influenza activity was at low levels, with both influenza A and B detections reported, predominantly influenza A(H3N2).
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity continued to increase in Ireland and remains at higher levels than usually observed at this time of year, added the report.
