    More than half of patients unaware of hospital complaints procedures

    According to surveys launched by Irish Society for Quality and Safety in Healthcare (ISQSH) 65 per cent of patients are unaware of the complaints procedure in hospitals; 18 per cent wanted to make a complaint but over a third did not do so. The main reason provided by patients for not discussing their complaint was that they did not feel they had the opportunity to bring it up, the surveys found.

    Young people who undergo CT scans are 24 per cent more likely to develop cancer compared with those who do not, a study published by the British Medical Journal suggests. However the absolute excess for all cancers combined was low, at 9.38 for every 100,000 person years of follow-up, the article added.

    Methotrexate alert project scoops QIP award

    Dr Diarmuid Quinlan and Dr Paul Ryan from the Glanmire Medical Centre, Cork came first in this year’s ICGP Quality in Practice (QIP) Awards, which were sponsored by Medisec. They won for their interdisciplinary, safety initiative – a patient held alert card which improved methotrexate use through the use of education and IT. ICGP Medical Director Dr Margaret O’Riordan, announced the winners and said that all entrants had demonstrated “concrete outcomes for their patients”.

    ICGP guidelines and protocols need to take into account what is practical in the current financial environment, the ICGP AGM heard. Speaking on behalf of the Kildare faculty, Dr Brendan O’Shea asked members to support a motion whereby traffic light classification would be used to indicate how implementable College guidelines and protocols are in clinical practice. This would then be updated annually.

    The ICGP is investigating moving premises in order to cope with increased demand on its educational services, the CEO of the College said. However, he confirmed that the ICGP is not planning to reduce the subscription fees to its members despite calls to do so.
